PATNA: Bihar reported 4,526 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, 1,478 more than the day before, bringing the number of active cases to 12,311 and the tally to 7,40,377, the state health department said.
With the surge, the RJD, which is the main opposition party in Bihar, closed its office in the state capital on Saturday indefinitely.
A state health department bulletin said no new deaths from the disease had been reported in the past 24 hours and the cumulative toll from the infection stood at 12,100.
A total of 71,596 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 704 in the past 24 hours.
Five districts in the state accounted for the majority of new cases, according to the bulletin.
Patna alone registered 1,956 new cases on Saturday.
As of Thursday and Friday, the city had recorded 1,407 and 1,314 cases, respectively.
The number of active cases now stands at 7,072 in Patna, according to the bulletin.
Gaya reported 953 cases, Muzaffarpur 569, Begusarai 433 and Saran 222, he said.
Bihar had registered 3,048 new cases of coronavirus on Friday.
A total of 6.21 crore of samples have been tested so far, including 2.10 lakh in the past 24 hours, according to the bulletin.
The state has so far counted one confirmed case of the Omicron variant.
Bihar’s Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Pratyaya Amrit sought to assure the people of the government’s will to deal with the situation.
“There is nothing to fear at all. The government of Bihar is already on high alert. Appropriate arrangements have been made in all hospitals. Ordinary people must be on high alert,” he said. .
The RJD has closed its office in the state capital indefinitely after some visitors tested positive after undergoing RT-PCR tests, party spokesman Chitaranjan Gagan said.
