Tourists skyrocket over December mini-vacation
The number of tourists visiting La Palma during the December “puente” * matched those recorded at the height of summer last August. Officials say hotel reservations in the east and north are on the rise with 85% occupancy from weekend to Wednesday. Binter, the main airline of the Canary Islands, scheduled 32 additional flights between La Palma and Tenerife Norte and Gran Canaria between December 5 and 9 while Fred Olsen will set up two additional ferry services between Los Cristianos and Santa Cruz de La Palma during the mini-break.
* The Spanish describe a long weekend created by a public holiday as a “puente”, which means bridge. Strictly to be a “stink”, the public holiday must fall in such a way that by taking a holiday day it creates a “bridge” to the weekend holiday, but in common usage, ” puente “now means any long weekend created by a holiday, even when it falls on a Friday or Monday.
December 6 and 8 are public holidays in Spain, which means that the 7th can be taken to bridge the gap between them. This year like the 6th is a Monday, it connects perfectly to create 5 days off, requiring only one day of vacation, Tuesday.
