Southern Live Oaks line the driveway of Boone Hall Plantation. In 1743 Major John Boone’s son planted the trees, arranging them in these two rows. But trees in general come with a story that happened in nearby Charleston. In the 1700s, a young couple about to marry traveled there to start a plantation and their new life. While walking through the forest, they were attacked and killed by an army of American Indians. They cut off the woman’s long black hair and threw it in a nearby oak tree.

Each time they passed the tree, they noticed that the hair shrivelled, turned gray and spread to other trees, and eventually chased it away from South Carolina. It is said that to this day, if one stands quietly enough, the moans of the woman can be heard under a live oak tree.
