The Mullingar Tourist Office in the Market Square is to be reopened as soon as possible.

This is according to Cllr Hazel Smyth, who told the Westmeath Examiner that with the town hosting a number of big events in the coming months such as the Westmeath Bachelor Festival and the fleadh, it is essential that visitors have a place to get information in the center of Mullingar. The tourist office, located in Market House, is run by Westmeath County Council.

“Actually, I don’t understand why it’s still closed. I think the original reason it was closed was due to Covid restrictions but it has not reopened. As we head into summer and people will hopefully come to Mullingar for events such as the Westmeath Bachelor Festival, Pride, Body & Soul, not to mention the fleadh, it really needs to be reopened.

While she says Mullingar and the surrounding area has plenty to offer visitors, such as the Royal Canal Greenway, Uisneach Hill and Tullynally Castle, the continued closure of the town’s tourist office gives the wrong impression visitors that there is nothing to promote. .

“The tourist office is conveniently located right next to the Joe Dolan statue. It’s in a busy part of town with bars, restaurants and cafes where people can walk in and get information.

“With big events, we should do our best to be able to accommodate people…It’s [the reopening of the tourism office]must happen sooner rather than later,” she said.

The Westmeath Examiner has contacted Westmeath County Council to find out when the tourist office will reopen, but as of press time has not received a response.
