The government has developed a multi-faceted communication network in Chattogram in a bid to tap into the port city’s tourism potential, Tourism Minister Mahbub Ali said.

“The Chattogram Airport expansion works are underway while the Bangabandhu tunnel, construction of the Dewanhat elevated highway from the airport, expansion of the Dohajari to Gumdhum railway line, upgrading and the expansion of the airport, the outer ring road and the Bayezid link road would help blow up the tourism industry here,” the minister said during a Chattogram broadcast yesterday.

Mahbub Ali was speaking as a chief guest at a program hosted by Agrabad Hotel marking its 50th anniversary as Chattogram’s premier hotel.

The flow of tourists and businesses to the port city will increase in future due to development activities, Mahbub Ali said while suggesting the construction of more international standard hotels, motels for them.

He observed that government alone cannot develop the tourism industry and it is the duty of government to formulate plans and policies which should be implemented with the support of private sector entrepreneurs.

Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Ashraf Uddin said environmental and safety issues are very important in attracting both tourists and investors. Industry police and tourism police have been strengthened as part of the process, he added.
