TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno called on event organizers (EOs) and all parties to learn lessons from the Halloween tragedy in Itaewon, South Korea, and the overcrowded Berdendang Bergoyang music festival in Senayan, South Jakarta. He also urged his aides to assess permits for a similar public program.
“I instructed Ibu Rizki Handayani (the deputy of the ministry in charge of tourism product and activity organizers) to conduct an assessment and inform event organizers to strictly observe the carrying capacity, the early warning system and ensure that evacuation routes and CPR are available,” Sandiaga said. .
According to him, every event organizer must be able to publish and manage crowds well to avoid accidents. He also reminded them to adhere to the Cleanliness, Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability (CHSE) protocol.
In the Itaewon Halloween tragedy on Saturday, Oct. 29, at least 154 people died on Monday due to a crowd crush as people thronged the narrow streets and alleys of Itaewon district to celebrate Halloween.
In Indonesia, the Berdendang Beryang music concert has attracted the attention of the public due to the participants beyond capacity. The third day of the festival on Sunday October 30 was thus canceled by order of the police. It was feared that the excess capacity could endanger visitors.
Sandiaga Uno claimed that the ministry summoned a number of event organizers and reminded them to be more disciplined in managing visitor capacity. “We called all the EOs for a briefing,” he said.
